Distinguished and Famous people from Winton

📜 Banjo Paterson and Christina Macpherson

Banjo Paterson wrote the words of Waltzing Matilda while visiting Dagworth Station near Winton in 1895. Christina Macpherson supplied the remembered tune that formed the basis of the original musical setting. Later versions changed the melody, so the familiar song carries more than one stage of collaboration. Their connection is a particular visit and creative exchange, rather than a claim that Paterson grew up in Winton. A station gathering produced a song that travelled extraordinarily far, with the district retaining an essential place in the story behind it.

✈️ Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster

Former airmen Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness joined with grazier Fergus McMaster to establish Qantas in 1920. Winton was the young company's first base before operations moved to Longreach in early 1921. The idea addressed the immense distances facing western Queensland communities, with mail, passengers and supplies later carried by air. Local shareholders helped support the venture. The founders' Winton association belongs to the practical beginning of an airline, when a few aircraft and a regional transport problem preceded the much larger international business that followed.

🦕 David and Judy Elliott

David Elliott found a large fossilised bone while mustering sheep at Belmont Station near Winton in 1999. It proved to be part of a dinosaur's femur, turning an ordinary working day into the beginning of a much larger project. Excavation followed, and David and Judy Elliott called a public meeting in 2002 to discuss a local dinosaur museum. Australian Age of Dinosaurs developed from that effort, linking fossil preparation, scientific work and public education. Their story is firmly local: discoveries beneath district grazing country helped build an institution that explains the much older world preserved there.
